Hey Gang,
You may have read on other forums about challenges with Roush motors; heat, premature wear, consuming large amounts of oil, etc.
My intent is NOT to turn this thread into a bashing of Roush but rather gain insights to your experiences with your Roush motor.
I have a 427SR with twisted cam (what ever that is) and Mass Flo FI system. I motor has been flawless with 6k miles on it.
Tell me what motor you have and what if any maintenance, performance, wear issues you may have. Also interested in what oil type (mineral/synthetic) and weight. If you have the 427IR motor I am very interested in which FI system you have; e.g. Woodward Mototron, Fast, Accel.
Thanks!
Jeff

Roush 427R #291.7,000 miles. Valvoline 20/40 conventional motor oil. Roush recalled and replaced distributor springs. Engine has run flawlessly.

Roush 427R #291.7,000 miles. Valvoline 20/40 conventional motor oil. Roush recalled and replaced distributor springs. Engine has run flawlessly. Roush spec'd 10w30 but I know a lot of people have gone to 40 weight. Thanks Jeff

My SPF had the 427 SR with the T/W wedge. At 8k it was smoking upo start up, and trailing smoke on declaration, and using a lot of oil. The car does not get driven very hard at all, and seldom any red line rpms. To make a long story short I pulled the heads at 9k. The combustion chambers were extremely carboned up and wet. After tearing the heads down, it was determined the valve stems were worn down by the brass valve guides. They has installed Chinese made valves in the heads. I them had the heads ported a bit and larger Fria valves installed. A friend has a SPF with about the same milage, and his pistons were craking and and the rings lands were breaking. He had to do a complete rebuild. I decided to seem my Roush before the same thing happened to me. So the engine to a guy in L.A. and called Keith Kraft and had an alum 427 Pond FE stoked to 482 and build. Love it, love it, live it. No oil consumption gores like a scalded ape and sound as nasty as anything I've heard on the streets. Just my experience and c .02 worth

How much did the Keith Craft set you back? If you didn't install it yourself what's the cost for someone to do that?

with billet pulleys, upgraded crank, rods, and polished intake. Aviad oil pan, cluth, pressure plate and alum flywheel, fuel pump a little over 24k

Hey Guys, thanks for the replies so far...
So we have 4 examples with about the same miles - 2 running fine...2 motors rebuilt.
I wonder what causes the failures? Is it risk common in general, related to punched out 351s, roush build/parts issue? Any thoughts?
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff I have a Roush 402R motor. Currently I have 7k on it and it runs strong and pulls like a freight train. I have been running 10W30 Synthetic for the past 2 summers but I'm going to switch to conventional 30 weight oil this summer.
Overall I'm very pleased with the motor.

Well it is not the 351, or it being stroked for that matter. Other builders use stroked 351's and do notg seem to have these issues. it is cheap parts. Mine were the valves. Surprised Roush would install such crap in an engine. I would not have used those things in my riding lawnmore. Told me all that I needed to know

my Roush #460 has 11k miles and burns some oil. It doesn't smoke and runs perfectly. Wonder what engine number have had problems?

I'm the friend with the other Roush 427 SRTW, number 808 I think. At 13,000 miles, oil consumption had gotten to be around 250 miles per quart. Still seemed to run great, no smoke. But then I don't red line it. Purely a street car. We decided to pull it out of the car and tear it apart and address the problem. What a mess inside. Bores scratched, one cracked piston, heads leaking oil from the guides, seals and valve stems, cam going flat, lifters bad, almost thought we were going to have to sleeve the lifter bores, but were able to save them after all.
After a total rebuild, the thing really runs strong, stronger than it ran from Roush in the first place. Dyno results after rebuild were, 443 hp and 463 tq at the rear wheels. At 17% powertrain loss, that computes to 533 hp and 557 tq. Original engine was 515/535. So, what has my experience with a Roush motor been? If I were you guys with 6 or 7,000 miles on your engines, I would be saving up for the expensive rebuild down the road. Will I buy another one or recommend them to anyone? F--K NO!
I'm currently having Brent Lykins over at Lykins Motorsports in Ky. build me a custom engine. When I get it, my rebuilt Roush goes up for sale! Any takers?

You would think with their experience building motors in Nascar they could build a decent motor for the street?

Pulled the heads on my 427SR when coolant leakage started. Also had white smoke at engine startup. Some oil consumption, but acceptable at 1200 miles/quart. Guides were worn due to inadequate clearance between underside of rockers and valve springs. Replaced guides, valve job, and head surfacing (due to gasket brinelling). Engine had 18000 miles. Am somewhat disappointed that Roush isn't more careful in checking all clearances on assembly. Would probably look at Keith Craft engine if doing it again.

In my engine research, I have hear from more than one person that Roush does not use very many Roush parts in these engines. Personally, I do not believe a Roush crate motor gets the same attention to detail as some of the crate motors by other builders mentioned in this thread.

I have a roush 427sr and oil use is an issue. No smoke, no leaks, plugs look good, but it does use oil. Where does it go? No, idea, so very confused about this issue. Going to start down the road of further investigation. FTI 2600 miles on the roush.
Anyone have any ideas of what the problem is?
