G'Day Fellow Cobra Addicts
I have planned for some time now (years actually) to buy a AC Cobra 427 Sc and have been scouring through the various manufacturers DAX, Factory Five, EBA, Back Draft, Absolute Pace, Kirkham, Shelby and of course Superformance, the list goes on and on !?!?
Everyone claims to have the best reproduction car yet they vary hugely in terms of engineering and cost. So I had to zero down my options in terms of cost (no I don’t have 300k to spend) and availability in Australia and/or ability to ship from the US. In summary my investigations so far show Kirkham as the best aluminium based reproductions and Superfromance as the best Fibreglass body reproductions.
A couple of points - I don’t want a 1000 HP fire breathing widow making monster, my key focus is on finding the best option in terms of authentic looks, feel and sound compared to an original 65/66 427 SC Shelby Cobra.
So all said and done, given I live in Melbourne, Superformance (as the only SAI licensed manufacturer of reproduction Cobra's) is looking like the way to go as the best compromise in terms of cost vs authenticity vs availability.
I have a pretty good idea of what body, colour, trim, wheels etc I want (right down to the Good Year Eagle Billboards ) and Superformance seems to cover that well.
My question is what would be the best drive train to order for the car to get what I am looking for. At this stage all I am thinking is a Rousch 427R although I would love a 427 FE Side Oiler! Rousch only have 511 FE motors and no 427 FE’s
As for gearbox my only thoughts so far are the 5 speed Tremec (with offset gear stick) but what model I don’t know. Diff and brakes I have no idea at this stage
Looking for your wisdom and experience here to put together the best car I can that will meet my desires of an authentic experience.
Superformance, like Shelby also do continuation cars!? What can you tell me about those? Is it worth chasing one of these instead. I don’t think you can even get the Shelby CSX6000’s into Oz so it’s only the Superformance option that would be possible.
Looking forward to your learned advise!
